William L. “Trey” Flournoy, Esq.

Biography

Trey Flournoy didn’t find property insurance law—it found him. In law school, he crossed paths with a mentor who had spent years as a contractor and public adjuster before pursuing a law degree. The more Trey learned about what it actually means to stand beside a policyholder at their lowest point, the more certain he became that this was the work he was meant to do. “I take pride in being able to help those who need it most when they have been most wronged,” he says. “It is part of the fabric of who I am as a person.”

A Florida native who grew up in the Tallahassee area, Trey left the state to attend Culver-Stockton College in Missouri, where he played NAIA football and competed on the mock trial team—an early sign of the competitive instincts and comfort under pressure that would define his legal career. He returned to Florida to attend Florida Coastal School of Law in Jacksonville, graduating in the top 20 percent of his class and earning an invitation to speak at the 5th District Court of Appeals during the official Florida Bar Swearing-In Ceremony based on his top bar score. He has been practicing first-party property insurance law ever since, and during the first several years of his career, he also handled other matters such as construction defect litigation.

Now, more than a decade into his career, Trey has built a reputation for tackling the cases other attorneys find complicated—and explaining them in a way that makes clients feel calm and confident rather than overwhelmed. He approaches every case with a people-first philosophy: fight hard, know the law cold, and never back down just because the road is tough. That commitment has produced life-changing results for his clients.

Trey was published in Florida Law Weekly for identifying and defeating an insurer’s misuse of the flood and groundwater exclusion to deny a claim. He has been recognized on the Super Lawyers Rising Star list every year since 2022 and currently serves as Team Lead of Merlin Law Group’s Dallas office. Trey’s practice spans Texas, Florida, and Georgia at both state and federal levels, and he has also worked in the Carolinas on a pro hac vice basis.

Beyond the courtroom, Trey is a devoted husband to his wife, Cristina, and father to their two sons. He grew up riding and showing horses and still enjoys spending time outdoors whenever he can—a throughline that’s stayed with him over the years.
